Chris Rock: Selective Outrage - Netflix
Picked by Reporter Lawrence Banton
Chris Rock is set to hit the stage for his first stand up special since 2018, but this is a major event for several reasons. It's the first time Netflix will stream a live stand up special and while few details about his set have been revealed, it's hard to believe that the comedian will shy away from one of pop culture's most talked about moments in years — the slap. The show is slated for Saturday, March 4, with a pre-show, The Show Before the Show, and a post-show, featuring a star-studded cast of comedians, kicking off at 9:30p.m. ET.
The Mandalorian - Season 3 - Disney+
Picked by Digital Editor Mike Nam
Pedro Pascal continues his run as a formerly-reluctant father figure watching over a special child — but this time in the Star Wars universe. Pascal's bounty hunter character Din Djarin and Grogu (aka Baby Yoda) are now on a quest to redeem Djarin in the eyes of his Mandalorian clan. Blaster fights and space battles ensue. The third season is now streaming on Disney+ as of Wednesday.
Cunk On Earth - Netflix
Picked by Growth Associate Keara O’Driscoll
Cunk On Earth is another hidden gem brought to us by the BBC. The series is a mockumentary following Philomena Cunk, a journalist aiming to tell the stories of the wonders of the world. The kicker is that she's extremely uninformed and asks questions like: ”What was the Soviet Onion?” If you like anything by Sacha Baron Cohen it will have you saying, "Very nice, I like."
Knock at the Cabin - Amazon Prime Video
Picked by Reporter Alex Vuocolo
Knock at the Cabin is a thought-provoking thriller from the modern-day master of suspense M. Night Shyamalan — who some would argue is on a bit of a hot streak with this and 2021's Old. In the interest of avoiding too many plot details, let's just say that a family vacationing in a rustic cabin gets some unexpected visitors who turn their lives upside down. From there, you can bet there are plenty of unexpected twists and turns, not to mention some clever direction from Shyamalan, who does wonders with a small set and just a handful of actors. The performances are also excellent, with former WWE wrestler Dave Bautista as the clear stand out.
Patty vs Patty - CBC
Picked by Newsletter Writer Graison Dangor
In cheeky reenactments, the 15-minute documentary dives into a bizarre, but ultimately uplifting, chapter in Toronto history. In 1985, the city's Jamaican patty shops were threatened by food regulators who said "patty" could only refer to hamburgers. Fighting back, one shop rallied the public and the press to defend their livelihoods and demand respect for their place in an increasingly multicultural city.
Mr. Queen - Netflix
Picked by Senior News Editor Dina Ross
Netflix has been serving up a ton of Korean content for me recently, so I bit and started watching Mr. Queen. A modern-day, hot-shot chef becomes a target of jealous enemies. Tragedy ensues and he finds himself in the body of a young, 19th-century queen (played by Shin Hye-sun) as she marries King Cheoljong (played by Kim Jung-hyun). Of course the premise is far-fetched, but the vibe of this romantic comedy is lighthearted and fun. While I don't have much of a touchpoint for the behavior of century-old royalty, the protagonist is a great caricature of the celebrity chefs we love (or love to hate) today.
