Instagram is expanding its age-verification tools to ensure everyone can safely use its platform.
The Meta-owned company is testing new ways for users to verify their age to new countries, including Mexico and Canada.
Users wishing to confirm their age can either upload physical identification documents or upload a selfie video. They can also ask their mutual friends to validate or "vouch" for their age via an uploaded video.
Meta started testing the feature in 2022 and found that it stopped 96 percent of teens who tried to lie about their age by editing their birthdays to make up over 18 years old.
The company first started asking for users to validate their age back in 2019 in a bid to stop children who are under 13 years old from joining the app.
To help with this effort, Meta is partnering with Yoti, which specializes in ways to verify age without violating privacy.
