From the big screens to the hard courts, here's what's going on in entertainment on Monday, April 10, 2023.
Weekend Box Office
After the blazing start for The Super Mario Bros. Movie on its opening day previews, it was expected that the movie would "smash" the weekend box office.
The Chris Pratt-led animated flick shattered predictions with a $204.6 million opening in the U.S. alone, and the global box office total was $377 million. Nintendo, Illumination, and Universal Studios have already recouped the $100 million budget it took to bring the project to life, hitting some impressive milestones compared to the field of films to hit theaters this year.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie currently holds the highest-grossing debut of the year, surpassing Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. It also holds the record for biggest five-day opening of all time, according to Variety.
Rounding out the top three in this weekend's box office was John Wick: Chapter 4 with $14.6 million and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves with $14.5 million.
NBA Playoffs
The 2023 regular NBA season wrapped up as the last teams battled for playoff positioning on Sunday. Seeds for post-season playoff games are nearly set as the seventh through 10th seeds in the Western and Eastern conferences gear up for the play-in tournament, which will tip off on April 11 and run through April 14.
The seventh and eighth seeds in each conference will face off for the seventh playoff spot, while the loser will have another chance to play for the eighth spot against the winner of the ninth and 10th matchup.
The trial of a Fugees rapper, who was convicted this year in multimillion-dollar political conspiracies, stretched across the worlds of politics and entertainment — and now the case is touching on the tech world with arguments that his defense attorney bungled the case, in part, by using an artificial intelligence program to write his closing arguments.
Israel said Wednesday that it will allow Egypt to deliver limited quantities of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, the first crack in a 10-day siege on the territory. Palestinians reeled from a massive blast at a Gaza City hospital that killed hundreds the day before and grew increasingly desperate as food and water supplies ran out.
A 4000-year-old slab of rock is being dubbed a treasure map for archaeologists. The rock was found in 1900 at the site of an ancient tomb in northwestern France and it was declared Europe's oldest known map in 2021.
Hundreds of people gathered for a vigil honoring a six-year-old Palestinian-American boy who was stabbed to death over the weekend by his family's landlord in an apparent hate crime.
If you have some older comic books stashed away in your attic, basement or closet, make sure to check their condition as they could be traded for serious cash. Cheddar News' Michelle Castillo at New Yor Comic Con spoke with Chris D'Lando, event manager with NYCC for Reedpop; Andy Mourat, co-founder and president of MetaZoo; and Julian Montoya, senior vice president of The Noble Collection, to get their thoughts.
