From the big screens to the hard courts, here's what's going on in entertainment on Monday, April 10, 2023.

Weekend Box Office

After the blazing start for The Super Mario Bros. Movie on its opening day previews, it was expected that the movie would "smash" the weekend box office.

The Chris Pratt-led animated flick shattered predictions with a $204.6 million opening in the U.S. alone, and the global box office total was $377 million. Nintendo, Illumination, and Universal Studios have already recouped the $100 million budget it took to bring the project to life, hitting some impressive milestones compared to the field of films to hit theaters this year.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie currently holds the highest-grossing debut of the year, surpassing Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. It also holds the record for biggest five-day opening of all time, according to Variety.

Rounding out the top three in this weekend's box office was John Wick: Chapter 4 with $14.6 million and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves with $14.5 million.

NBA Playoffs

The 2023 regular NBA season wrapped up as the last teams battled for playoff positioning on Sunday. Seeds for post-season playoff games are nearly set as the seventh through 10th seeds in the Western and Eastern conferences gear up for the play-in tournament, which will tip off on April 11 and run through April 14.

The seventh and eighth seeds in each conference will face off for the seventh playoff spot, while the loser will have another chance to play for the eighth spot against the winner of the ninth and 10th matchup.
