From a slow start for 'The Flash' to an 'Airbender' reveal, here's what's happening in entertainment.

Weekend Box Office

Despite it being a holiday weekend, it was a rough outing at the domestic box office.

DC's The Flash took the top spot but opened with a disappointing $55 million, after it was projected to collect at least $70 million. Another $75 million at international theaters pushed the global opening weekend total to $139 million. Despite controversy surrounding the film's star, Ezra Miller, anticipation around the project in the weeks leading up to its theatrical release was high...even horror writer Stephen King said he liked it.

Pixar's Elemental also struggled in its opening weekend after bringing in just $29.5 million. The film about two unlikely elements, water and fire, finding commonality in each other, brought in just $15 million at the international box office. Those numbers made it Pixar's worst opening weekend in the company's history. Like, The Flash, expectations were high, particularly after it was screened as the grand finale at Cannes '23.

Both films reportedly had budgets of around $200 million.

The Last Airbender

Netflix's live-action series adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender is due to premiere in 2024 but the streaming giant is giving a sneak peek of what fans can expect.

During a live-streamed fan event in São Paulo, Brazil, Netflix released a first look inside and introduced the actors that have been tapped to take on the lead roles of Aang, Katara, Sokka and Zuko. This live-action remake will be the second adaptation; M. Night Shyamalan directed a film version in 2010. His effort, while raking up over $315 million at the global box office, was not well-received

Squid Game Deux

Squid Game was one of Netflix's most-watched titles and for the millions of people dying for season two, there is great news.

The cast for the second run has been unveiled, with a few season one survivors making a comeback. The project is slated to be released sometime in 2024 but prior to its debut, Squid Game: The Challenge, a game show, will premiere on the streamer in November. In that reality show, 456 contestants will test their bodies' limits in pursuit of a $4.56 million cash jackpot.
