From a whole lot of GOATs to la muerte de 'El Muerto,' here's what's happening in entertainment.

Nintendo News

Nintendo made some major announcements at its second Direct presentation of the year.

Perhaps some of the biggest news to come out of the session was the slew of games that will be optimized for the Nintendo Switch. At least two Super Mario games are headed to the console along with WarioWare and Detective Pikachu. Princess Peach, for the first time, is also expected to get her own standalone game (as yet untitled). Luigi will also get the same treatment and both games are expected to be available in 2024. And in case you were wondering, coming off the wild success of the Super Mario Bros. Movie, there has not been an announcement for a sequel; however, actor Chris Pratt, who voiced Mario, told Entertainment Tonight that an announcement would be coming "soon."

Sports Break

ESPN has unveiled nominees for the 2023 ESPY Awards.

LeBron James and Mikaela Shiffrin are up against each other in the 'Best Record-Breaking Performance' category. This year, James became the NBA's leading scorer – and he continues to push that record further with each point he scores. (Imagine setting a record every night until the end of your career?) Meanwhile Shiffrin, won her 87th skiing World Cup, the most of any professional skier, man or woman. The ceiling is extremely high for the 28-year-old as she shows no signs of slowing down.

Other major categories and nominees:

Best Athlete, Women's Sports:

  • Mikaela Shiffrin, Ski

  • Sophia Smith, Portland Thorns

  • Iga Świątek, Tennis

  • A'ja Wilson, Las Vegas Aces

Best Athlete, Men's Sports:

  • Nikola Jokić, Denver Nuggets

  • Aaron Judge, New York Yankees

  • Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs

  • Lionel Messi, Argentina

Best Championship Performance:

  • Leon Edwards, UFC

  • Nikola Jokić, Denver Nuggets

  • Lionel Messi, Argentina

  • Rose Zhang, LPGA

Golden State Warriors' guard Stephen Curry has been tapped to take up hosting duties again for this year's ceremony.

Wimbledon 2023

Also in sports, Venus Williams will make her 24th appearance at the 2023 Wimbledon Grand Slam.

She was awarded a wild-card entry ahead of the July 3 start. Williams has won the Grand Slam seven times. Days before receiving the entry, she scored a victory over a top-50 player, Camila Giorgi, for the first time in more than three years.

Bad Bunny's 'El Muerto'

If you were looking forward to Bad Bunny's El Muerto, which is a Spider-Man spinoff, we have some bad news.

Sony reportedly removed the project from its release schedule. It was initially slated to hit theaters in January 2024. The project was meant to be the studio's first live-action superhero flick and just one of several Spider-Man spin-offs in the works. It is unclear whether or not Spidey would actually make an appearance in the project.

The film currently has no rescheduled release date.
