From the end of physical media rentals to Pixar's latest, here are your entertainment headlines.
Netflix DVDs
It's the end of an era for Netflix as the streaming behemoth ends its DVD rental service.
Since 1998, the streaming service provided physical copies DVDs and Blu-ray rentals through DVD.com but has steadily decreased available titles in an effort to push subscribers to its streaming service, which went live in 2007.
"Our goal has always been to provide the best service for our members but as the business continues to shrink that's going to become increasingly difficult," Ted Sarandos, Netflix CEO, said in a blog post.
Over the course of 25 years, Netflix reported that it sent more than 5.2 billion discs to over 40 million subscribers, with Beetlejuice being the first-ever. The Blind Side, starring Sandra Bullock and Quinton Aaron, was the most popular movie title.
The final DVDs are set to be mailed out on September 29.
More Fast & Furious
The Fast and Furious franchise is set to end — for real this time, we think.
Ahead of the Fast X release, slated for May 19, it has been revealed that the film has tapped a familiar face in Louis Leterrier to direct the final project. Leterrier joined the Fast family last year when director Justin Lin stepped down.
With Fast X rumored to end with a big cliffhanger, the eleventh installment is said to continue that story as well as put a bow on the entire franchise. So far, the nine released films have grossed $6 billion at the global box office, which is enough to be Universal's most profitable and longest running franchise, according to Variety.
'Elemental' at Cannes
Pixar is returning to the Cannes Film Festival this year and will close out the week with Elemental.
It's the fourth time the studio has had a project presented in the festival's Official Selection main event behind Up, Inside Out, and Soul. All of those films went on to gross over $100 million, with Inside Out and Up eclipsing $500 million comfortably.
Elemental follows the unlikely friendship of two individuals, Ember, a flame, voiced by Leah Lewis, and Wade, essentially water, voiced by Mamaoudou Athie, and their discovery that beings in their society have more in common than they don't.
The film is set to premiere in U.S. theaters on June
